You are invited to a retreat/workshop hosted by the newly-created UWM Center for Functional and Environmental Genomics to be held at the UWM Hefter Conference Center (3271 N. Lake Drive) on October 23, 2004. The mission of the Center for Functional and Environmental Genomics (CFEG) is to foster a scholarly environment for the intellectual interaction among biologists, chemists, mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers at UWM, The WATER Institute and neighboring universities. CFEG investigators using genomic and bioinformatic approaches to address integrated biological questions in genetics, environmental science, ecology, evolution, and biotechnology will have the opportunity to interact on a regular basis through frequent meetings, seminars and symposia.

The purpose of this retreat/workshop is bring together Faculty, Academic Staff, Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows interested in genomics and bioinformatics in order to promote broad-based intellectual interactions. The morning program will include 10-15 minute research presentations by faculty and staff. The afternoon program will consist of a poster session and panel discussions. A catered continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The retreat/workshop is open to interested PIs and members of their laboratory actively pursuing independent research projects. Feel free to pass this message to members of your laboratory. Registration is free. Contact Mike Carvan at for registration information. The deadline for registering is September 24th. On the registration site, PIs will be asked if they are willing to give a short oral presentation and/or poster (one poster per laboratory) discussing their research to a broad audience.
