Research Interests

My research involves development of genomic indicators of ecological and environmental health. I am using genomics and proteomics to develop multiple biomarkers of exposure and effect of various present and emerging contaminants for native invertebrate and fish relevant to the ecology of the Great Lakes Basin. This data will be linked to current indicators of environmental health and will be developed as a tool for ecological risk assessment. In my lab we are identifying mRNA and protein expression profiles that could serve as an indication of stress in native species either due to starvation or exposure to existing and emerging contaminants, including pharmaceutical compounds, pesticides, and nitrogen inputs from agriculture. In addition, we will use this information to investigate common mechanisms of action of these stressors across taxa to provide a better indication of how data may be extrapolated across species.
