Research statement:
My research interests involve the molecular mechanisms of adaptation that allow an organism to live under changing and/or adverse conditions. Environments are certainly not static and human influences have greatly accelerated the rate of environmental change, which can be acute or chronic, temporary or permanent. It is important to know what genes and pathways influence an organism's adaptability under stressful environmental conditions to make better pred ictions of the risk these conditions pose to particular organisms or populations. The disruption of cellular and molecular pathways have the potential to influence fitness, especially during times of rapid growth and development. Research currently underway in the laboratory takes advantage of the power of the zebrafish genetic model system to explore the mechanism(s) by which xenobiotics (e.g. environmental chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals) induce disease in both fish and humans, and to identify genes that influence sensitivity and resistance to chemical exposure.
