I. Environmental Impacts of Emerging Contaminants

My research examines the impact of various emerging contaminants (e.g. nanomaterials, pharmaceuticals) as well as natural stressors on freshwater organisms. We are using genomic data as a tool to investigate the impacts of these various potential stressors and to develop biomarkers of exposure and effect to be used as tools for ecological risk assessment. Please see the links provided to the left.

II. Freshwater management and the Great Lakes Compact Agreement

Freshwater is a limited resource. Access to clean freshwater is one of the most important human health and environmental issues worldwide. In addition we need water for maintaining ecosystem health, generating power, irrigation of crops, transportation. The Great Lakes of North America are the worlds largest surface freshwater system and several government and private entities outside of the Great Lakes Basin have examined the possibility of using the Lakes to make up for dwindling or contaminated water supplies elsewhere.  The Great Lakes Compact Agreement is an international Treaty to prevent water from being removed from the Great Lakes watershed.  I recently co-produced a full-length movie about surface and groundwater watersheds and the Compact Agreement.  For details please click here!

Locally I am also involved in a community project to improve the Kinnickinnic River Watershed in Milwaukee. For more information please click here.
