About the Great Lakes WATER Institute
The
WATER Institute provides outstanding opportunities for the pursuit
of global aquatic research, education and outreach programs, with
an emphasis on the Great Lakes region. The Institute serves as
home for the Center for Great Lakes Studies, the NIEHS Marine
and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center, the Wisconsin Aquaculture
Center, and the newly formed DARPA supported Center for Water
Security. The Institute's research vessel R/V Neeskay (22
m) serves as a research platform for "at sea" operations throughout
the Great Lakes. The Institute also houses a University of Wisconsin
Sea Grant
Advisory Services Field Office; the Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources Southern Lake Michigan Fisheries Management and Law Enforcement
Units; the NOAA National Undersea Research Program Great Lakes
Office; and serves as the Lake Michigan home port for the US EPA R/V
Lake Guardian (56 m). Located within one of the country's
major metropolitan regions, the WATER Institute has ready access
to scientific and technical resources within a diverse array of
major institutions of higher learning, industry and health science.
