About the Great Lakes WATER Institute

The WATER Institute provides outstanding opportunities for the pursuit of global aquatic research, education and outreach programs, with an emphasis on the Great Lakes region. The Institute serves as home for the Center for Great Lakes Studies, the NIEHS Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center, the Wisconsin Aquaculture Center, and the newly formed DARPA supported Center for Water Security. The Institute's research vessel R/V Neeskay (22 m) serves as a research platform for "at sea" operations throughout the Great Lakes. The Institute also houses a University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Advisory Services Field Office; the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Southern Lake Michigan Fisheries Management and Law Enforcement Units; the NOAA National Undersea Research Program Great Lakes Office; and serves as the Lake Michigan home port for the US EPA R/V Lake Guardian (56 m). Located within one of the country's major metropolitan regions, the WATER Institute has ready access to scientific and technical resources within a diverse array of major institutions of higher learning, industry and health science.
