Research Interests
One area of interest is in relating the structure of chemolithotrophs to their ecological niche, and to their response to the environment; something I call "structural ecology". Most recently, this work has focused on methane-oxidizing bacteria and involves studies of ecology, ultrastructure, physiology and molecular biology. A second area involves biogeochemical studies in Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone National Park, and here we are focusing on the ecological role and significance of chemosynthesis and photosynthesis in sublacustrine hydrothermal vents and gas fumaroles.
