Interesting Facts about the KK River

LITTER

In a 2004 clean up organized by Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers, approximately 100 lbs. of trash were removed from a stretch of the Kinnickinnic River along Baran Park

  • The Florida Litter Study found that "litter had the strongest correlation with perceptions of neighborhood decline and disorder.

CRIME

--The river is now associated with criminal activity and this is one  

   of the major concerns of residents.

--Creating a space that is easily accessible and desirable could

   decrease crime in the area. 

  • Residents living in greener surroundings report lower levels of fear, fewer incivilities, and less aggressive and violent behavior.
  • The presence of vegetation increases residents’ use of community outdoor spaces.
  • Increased use of community space heightens surveillance, as well as implied surveillance in the area.
  • Criminals avoid well used community areas where their activities can easily be observed.
  • Violent crimes are 56% less likely to occur in highly vegetated public areas than areas with little or no vegetation.

Positive Effects of Trails

  • Amenity for Nearby Homeowners. 

--65% of real estate agents surveyed in Vancouver, B.C. felt that a trail would help sell a home.  - City of Vancouver “Bicycle Plan 1999”

  • Attracts Business Activity

--30% of the business owners along the Fox River Trail in Green Bay reported an   increase in business after the trail opened  - Brown Cty. Plan Commission

  • Jobs and Investment

--The Mispillion River Greenway in Delaware is credited with creating over 250 jobs  -Rails to Trails Conservancy

A trail is currently under construction!  It will probably run from 1st and Becher Street to 6th and Rosedale Court, and is scheduled for completion in 2007. Expansion of trails along the river could lead to positive investment in the community and provide recreation areas for citizens.
