Great Lakes WATER Institute Green Roof Project

Goals of the Great Lakes WATER Institute Green Roof demonstration project:

1) Decrease stormwater runoff volume and pollutants from GLWI site. With at least 8 inches of planting depth, the proposed 9,750 ft2 green roof area could absorb nearly 300 gallons per minute of runoff, decreasing the runoff to 30% of that from a traditional asphalt and gravel roof. Soil media can slow water drainage, which would allow particulates, including fecal bacteria, to settle out before draining to the harbor.

2) Establish a line of evidence for the environmental and economic benefits of a green roof on the GLWI building, and establish a precedent for the use of green roof technology in the University of Wisconsin System. A monitoring regime of the installation by WATER Institute scientists is an integral part of this project. With recorded improvements in stormwater and water demand reduction, energy savings, and enhanced roof structural integrity, there will be documentation of green building benefits and support for eventual expansion of the GLWI green roof in the future. This will, in hand with the education and outreach activities, promote the use of green building technology in the University of Wisconsin System.

3) Provide experience in design and installation of green building technology for local businesses. Local engineering, design and construction firms acting as contractors or subcontractors will gain practical on-site experience with green roof installation. In addition, presentations about design and installation will be offered to local firms or individuals seeking exposure to the logistics of green roof implementation as the project progresses, offering a valuable on-site educational opportunity.

4) Provide a unique education site to promote the benefits of green roofs. The GLWI green roof will establish a venue that facilitates communication between land/building owners, green building organizations, designers and contractors about environmentally-positive design and construction, as well as engaging the Milwaukee community in the potential to transform cities into sustainable cities. The Great Lakes WATER Institute mission encompasses education and outreach. With a green roof demonstration site, the GLWI can provide an important link between a functioning green roof and the educational efforts regarding green technology, especially for the cirricula of the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning and other agencies in our community, such as the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance and Menomonee Valley Partnership.
