The 2008 Lake Sturgeon Bowl Teams:

Competition Background

The National Ocean Sciences Bowl is sponsored by the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education to encourage and support “the next generation of marine scientists, policy makers, teachers, explorers, researchers, technicians, environmental advocates, and informed citizens.” CORE represents 74 oceanographic institutions, universities and aquaria and is funded by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP), a collaboration of 15 federal agencies.

During the Lake Sturgeon Bowl competition, students are asked three types of questions:  toss-up questions, where the first team to buzz in may answer the question; bonus questions, awarded to a team that correctly answers a toss-up question; and team-challenge questions, which require teammates to work together, often with the aid of charts, maps, and graphs, to answer questions based on real-time data and current research issues and policy.  Question difficulty increases as the competition progresses.

The 25 teams were divided into divisions for the preliminary “round-robin” games.  Teams advanced from the preliminary rounds to the double-elimination round.  The winner of the last double-elimination round was crowned tournament champion.

The Lake Sturgeon Bowl receives financial support from the Brunswick Public Foundation, the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education, the UW-Milwaukee Great Lakes WATER Institute, UW Sea Grant Institute, Wisconsin Energy Corporation Foundation, and the Dorothy Inbusch Foundation.  Additional sponsors include CDM, Fisher Scientific, NASCO, Fort Atkinson, John G. Shedd Aquarium, Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin, UWM Bookstore, and the UWM College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
